Channel Harlem Open Mic Workshop is a flagship program of DSC, a Harlem-based cultural platform dedicated to developing new voices through live performance and education. Structured as a comedy lab and performance incubator, the workshop creates a consistent and accessible space where emerging comedians refine original material, build stage presence, and engage directly with diverse audiences.
The project operates through a weekly open mic workshop model that blends performance with feedback and peer learning. Participants test new material in front of live audiences, receive immediate response, and strengthen their comedic voice through repetition and refinement. This approach transforms the traditional open mic into an intentional development environment.
The workshop also provides emerging comedians with the opportunity to observe working performers from platforms such as Comedy Central, HBO, Netflix, and BuzzFeed as they actively develop and refine new material in real time. This level of access is essential to finding one’s voice because it demystifies the creative process and demonstrates that even established comedians are continually evolving their work through experimentation and iteration.
In addition to weekly sessions, the program produces curated showcases featuring standout performers, creating a clear pipeline from early-stage experimentation to polished presentation. These showcases function as both public performances and professional opportunities for participating artists.
As part of DSC’s broader mission, Channel Harlem Open Mic Workshop contributes to Harlem’s cultural ecosystem by centering local voices and expanding access to performance infrastructure. The project builds on the founder’s experience co-curating programming at the Grisly Pear Comedy Club and applies that curatorial rigor to a community-rooted, artist development model.
