About

The Chicory Project breathes new life into Chicory Magazine, honoring its legacy by fostering creative expression and community engagement in Baltimore. Originally published from 1966 to 1983, Chicory Magazine was a cornerstone for underrepresented voices in Baltimore, capturing the spirit and resilience of its communities. Today, The Chicory Project extends this mission by providing a dynamic platform for diverse voices through artistic workshops and educational programs.

Our Team:
The Chicory Project is led by a dedicated and passionate team:
  • Devlon Waddell: A seasoned artist and community organizer, Devlon brings a wealth of experience in community engagement.
  • Victor Rodgers/Slangston Hughes: An accomplished poet and performer, Victor curates powerful narratives of the Black experience through prose, poetry, and live performances.
  • Kevin Johnson Jr.: A worker in creative arts and activism, Kevin focuses on fostering cultural preservation in the digital advocacy space

Activities to Fulfill Our Mission:
  1. Artistic Workshops: We conduct regular workshops that provide a space for local artists to develop their skills, share their work, and collaborate on projects. These workshops cover various forms of artistic expression, including visual arts, writing, and performance, and are designed to be accessible to all community members.
  2. Educational Programs: We offer a range of educational programs aimed at integrating Baltimore’s cultural narratives into learning environments. These programs include the Oral Histories Project, which records and preserves the personal experiences of Baltimore’s residents, and provides schools and organizations with tools to incorporate these stories into their curricula.
  3. Community Events: We host events such as live listening sessions, poetry readings, panel discussions, and author talks. These events foster community interaction, reflection, and celebration of Baltimore's diverse narratives, creating a sense of belonging and shared identity.
