Cinema Preservation Alliance

The art of cinema is at a crossroads. For the first time in its 120 years of existence, the technology used to create and present the motion picture has entirely changed from one proven, stable medium (analog film) to an entirely unproven one (digital storage). With this uncertainty about its longevity also comes a radical aesthetic departure, and Cinema Preservation Alliance aims to keep the art form available to be seen in its intended projected format, while embracing the advantages in archiving which digital technology can provide.
 
Current projects include:
AMERICA FIRST (1972) – Unreleased second feature film from the director of SPRING NIGHT SUMMER NIGHT – 2K restoration, supervised by Director of Photography Ed Lachman

NICOLAS WINDING REFN COLLECTION -
4k digital restoration of over 100 rare and/or newly-discovered independent films
 
 Recently completed restorations include:
• THERESE AND ISABELLE (1968) – The late Radley Metzger's early widescreen masterpiece, based on the Leduc novel of two French private school girls who find themselves in a torrid and illicit affair. Our 4K restoration, in French, from the original 35mm camera negative for the first time, premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival.

• LUMINOUS PROCURESS (1971) – Complete 2K digital reconstruction of the legendary Steven Arnold underground erotic classic, featuring San Francisco's Cockettes. Has now been released on Blu-ray by Second Run.

• OBEDIENCE - The Stanley Milgram Experiment (film) – 4K restoration 

• SPRING NIGHT SUMMER NIGHT (1967) – 4k digital reconstruction from the original camera negative. One of the most important "missing" American independent feature films of the 1960s, brought back to life in the version as originally intended by its creators before being brutally re-edited by a one-time distributor. Directed by J.L. Anderson; Restoration coordinated by CPA for Nicolas Winding Refn and byNWR.com.
 
• SANTO EN CEREBRO DEL MAL (1961) and SANTO CONTRA HOMBRES INFERNALES (1961) – 4k digital restorations from the original camera negatives – The first on-screen appearances of Mexico's legendary wrestler in the silver mask, El Santo, a preservation project of Permanencia Voluntaria, Nicolas Winding Refn and Academy Film Archive
 
• The Neglected "Genre Films" of Mexico – Ongoing collaboration with Permanencia Voluntaria in Tepoztlan, Mexico, to recover and restore classics of Mexican popular cinema from 1932-1980.
