About

City Vanguard produces short and feature-length documentaries as a source of educational support, historic preservation, and civic engagement. We focus on ethnographic topics that pertain to underrepresented communities and their social impact on local communities.

In 2013, City Vanguard, known as Sub Verse Studios at the time, began providing videography services for organizations and individuals who were looking to create a “multimedia identity.” Through the years our projects began to lean heavily towards documentary inspired projects such as EPKs promos, and sizzle reels. In 2016, we began production on our first short documentary entitled Got The Love that chronicled contemporary Chicago soul music community. The film was an official selection of the Black Harvest Film Festival and was nominated for a Black Excellence Award by the African American Art Alliance. This launched the company in a direction that focused solely on different documentary forms.  Our service is geared to a number of markets including, universities and colleges, non-profit organizations, school districts, community centers, libraries, and arts organizations. However, our primary market is the educational disturbing market. Although not as well known this market provides several opportunities for documentary film distribution. We will target companies and organizations that have a need for ethnographic documentaries as a source of education or entertainment purposes.  This allows us the opportunity to build an ongoing relationship with the company or organization.
