About

Confluence: Stream Science, Handwriting and Urban Curbs started in 2014 as I considered the dynamics of water and climate in the western US – as it flows from mountain peaks to oceans and lakes. Along the way water moves through forests and cities, bodies and pipes. A public artwork seemed the best way to share this fascinating and necessary complexity.

Through research and reflection, the idea developed into a mile-long poem about how scientists understand water, and how water shapes land and life. Using a bright yellow, adhesive-backed film and a digital cutting process, the text will be rendered in the handwriting of the Federal Water Master who managed conflicting water rights in the Reno area from 1958 until his death in 1984. Using his handwriting to put words to my own experience is like having a friendly spirit on my shoulder. The text content is based on four years of work with ecologists in the Sierra Nevada where we measured streams to understand their vulnerabilities and resilience, as well as research on ancient water systems, and additional field work with urban structures and buried streams. Water ties everything together, shaping the world while changing from one form to another. Attention to the crucial role of water affirms our own vulnerability and reliance on place.

With your support, “Confluence” will become a lively and personal public artwork in which  people experience their interdependence with the land. The budget of $93,000 is partially supported by a matching $10,000 project grant from the City of Reno. Costs include materials, typesetting, cutting, preparation of surfaces, transportation and lodging, artist and installation assistants’ fees, monitoring, documentation and a printed catalogue.

Supporters and critics, audiences and collaborators: without you this work has little meaning or value. There are many pathways through creative work but connection with others is perhaps the most essential. Please consider a donation if you are able.
