Theatre and performing arts creates avenues for mental well-being, self-love and empathy for others.
In 2021, I started an organization, Sawubona Creativity Project whose mission is to use my experience as a mental health professional, improv performer actor, director and teaching artist to create trauma sensitive classrooms and spaces that provide children, teens and adults with a safe, non-judgmental environment where academic exploration and creativity can flourish. Theatre arts programs are a fun and interactive way to not only teach an artform but to also teach vital social emotional and character development skills that everyone needs in order to develop healthy identities and compassion for others. Sawubona Creativity Projects seeks to provide spaces and performance opportunities for artists and creatives to come together to create and showcase their talents to the public. Yes, Let's! Improv, our kids and teens program sends teaching artist into low-income area and after-school programs where students don't always have access to theatre and/or creative arts. We also offer free workshops and family-friendly shows at our theatre space in South Philadelphia.
