Cryptic Lineages is a new body of work by interdisciplinary artist Laura Splan exploring technological translations of the biological world with tactile artworks and sensory experiences. References to epigenetic research on environmental influences on gene expression serve as a conceptual scaffold to explore the impact of past events on our present bodies and future humanity. This new series of multimedia projects will engage audiences through free and subsidized public programming including exhibitions, performances, lectures, workshops, publications, and discussions.
A Guided Sublimationis an immersive planetarium experience with star projections, 3D animations, sound, AI, and scent exploring the interconnectedness of micro and macro worlds, past and present bodies. A Guided Sublimation premiered at the Vanderbilt Museum Planetarium in 2023 and support is needed to produce the exhibition for planetarium and full dome venues around the world.
Tangible Variationsis a series of computerized Jacquard weavings with patterns taken from scientific visualizations. These large-scale weavings explore interpolation and noise in computational representations of molecular phenomena. Tangible Variations premiered at the Wignall Museum of Contemporary Art in 2023. Support is needed to produce additional weavings for upcoming exhibitions.
Metafrictions is a multimedia installation combining extended reality technologies. The work explores liminal sensations of the technological and biological with VR, interactive sound, sculpture, and 3D animation, as well as performance. Metafrictions will be previewed at ONX Studio (NYC) in Feb 2024 and presented in Getty PST ART (CA) in Aug 2024. Support is needed to produce sculptures, costumes, visuals, sound, and printed matter for upcoming exhibitions.
Laura Splan is Brooklyn-based artist working at the intersections of Science, Technology, and Culture. Her interdisciplinary projects reframe artifacts of the posthuman landscape to unravel entanglements of natural and built systems. Her internationally recognized artworks and exhibitions have been presented at the Brooklyn Museum, Musea Brugge (Bruges), Museum of Arts & Design (NY), Centre d’Art Santa Mònica (Barcelona), World Art Dubai, and The Nobel Prize Museum at Liljevalchs (Stockholm). Her work is represented in the collections of Thoma Art Foundation and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and has been commissioned by the CDC Foundation and the Bruges Triennial.
