LOGLINE: An intimate verite short documentary portrait of the Cuban musicians that make up the band for the Broadway hit Buena Vista Social Club.
SYNOPSUS: Circumstances in Cuba forced them to emigrate to the U.S. They have made a living as musicians doing anything and everything they could: teaching music classes, playing parties and bars, playing on other people’s albums. They were musicians that were only known to those in the know - until now. Now they are performing on a Broadway stage for a thousand people a night. They won a Tony Award. They performed on a Grammy Award winning album. They are the musicians of the Buena Vista Social Club Broadway musical, some of the greatest Cuban musicians anywhere on the planet, in or out of Cuba.
As their home country collapses, they do what they can by keeping their music alive – music that was passed from fathers to sons, music that is in now in danger of being lost. Now that the old generation, the OG musicians like Compay Segundo, are gone, they have become the custodians of the music to make sure that it can get passed on to the next generation. Our short documentary will weave together verité portraits of a handful of these musicians in their daily lives to tell the story of how music saved them, and how they are saving their home culture by keeping the music alive.
