To promote public awareness of Mark Rothko's work and life and create a central access point for information about events, articles and exhibitions related to his art and legacy.
Hi,
I've been doing Daily Rothko on multiple social media platforms (starting on tumblr) for 9 years.
I have never missed a day posting a Rothko painting. Over the years, I started to share quotations, biographical information and anecdotes about Rothko's life. It has been a labor of love. My followers on social media are a big part of this, asking questions and contributing personal experiences and photographs from exhibitions they have attended.. I believe this interaction plays a little part in bringing people to the art and I strive for accuracy both in reproductions and biographical information. I have lots of help with this from the Rothko-loving public. It's a little community, including many artists, that I am glad to be involved with.
The problem I am facing is that I do this alone and it takes a lot of time handling accounts and doing research as well as money that I spend on books and archival materials. There are many things I feel would enhance this project that I cannot afford to do without financial help.
Here are a few examples:
- I am writing a series of articles I would like to publish about Rothko's impact in the modern world. Scholarly material on Rothko from art historians is good and I don't wish to retread old ground. However, there are some sides of the Rothko legacy I would like to cover based on my experiences, including interviews I have done with people on how they have come to the work, coverage of fakes and misattributions, and biographical impressions based on numerous interviews I have read with his family and friends.
- A bigger and ongoing project would be to create a website and central database that art enthusiasts can use to locate travelling Rothko exhibits and find which paintings are in which museums. Many people ask me these questions personally but if there was a place where all this information lived and someone to update it, people could look up available Rothko works in different cities they are travelling to.
We are living in a troubled world with many humanitarian concerns that should rightly take precedence over my little project, but I also believe in the power of art and have witnessed how important Rothko's work is to a huge number of people. If you can contribute even a small amount to this effort, I will greatly appreciate it.
