The Story The DC Black Film Festival (DCBFF) started out as one film critic’s desire to see more diversity on the big screen. After seeing the statistics for minorities in the Hollywood system, founder/director Kevin Sampson decided to launch a festival in the nation’s capitol that would give exposure to underrepresented black filmmakers, actors and actresses.
The DC Black Film Festival is dedicated to showcasing quality film, web series and television content by and about people of African descent. We support emerging artists striving to add diversity to the images and storytellers working in the entertainment industry. DCBFF is committed to playing an integral role in discovering, celebrating, and helping films and filmmakers by bringing them to the attention of the industry, media and public. By donating to this campaign, you can be a part of the cause as well!
Why Should I Care? Media has the power of influence in our lives whether we like it or not. If film goers only see one perspective and certain types of black characters it can potentially paint an image of a culture that’s not true. This doesn’t just go for blacks in cinema, but other ethnicities, women in cinema, and other minority groups. The amazing thing about cinema is that you can learn from other human experiences and start a conversation based on what you’ve learned. That’s what film festivals do best! Create a space for entertainment, conversation, and cultural exchange.
THANK YOU Thank you for taking a moment to learn about our festival. We appreciate your interest in seeing the DC Black Film Festival be all that it can be! Your enthusiasm and willingness to spread the word will help build the momentum needed to move this project forward. THANK YOU for your support.
