The Sikhs of the US have a long and painful history of displacement. Despite having suffered the bloody 1947 partition of India; Indira Gandhi’s Operation Blue Star and the anti-Sikh pogrom that followed her assassination; and, to top it off, the hate-crimes post 9/11, the Sikh community continues to thrive. Our documentary on the Sikh diaspora will analyze these events that shape Sikh identity to understand the Sikh psyche at present. We hope to capture the ways in which the US Sikh community both preserves its roots and creates new identities, with special attention on the still-present effects of 1984.
For this project we will be conducting interviews with survivors of the 1984 massacre, established Sikh scholars and professionals, and members of the flourishing Sikh community here in Northern California. Our budget and fundraising goal is $300,000. This will go towards production costs including camera equipment, transportation, editing, distribution, to name a few. We deeply appreciate any contribution you can make.
We hope the documentary will inspire today’s generation to demand justice be done for 1984 in India. And we hope to educate non-Sikhs and raise awareness of this minority who is often misunderstood in the US.
