Black and Brown women in the U.S. are three to four times more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than white women—and in some communities, that gap is even wider. While most public conversations focus on access or behavior, the truth is more unsettling: racial bias and medical neglect are at the core of this crisis. Delivering Justice is a feature-length investigative documentary that pulls back the curtain on how these disparities play out in real time—and presents a path forward rooted in healing, history, and culturally affirming care.
At the heart of the film are the lived stories of families, midwives, and doulas who are reshaping what safe, supported birth can look like—especially for communities of color. Their experiences are presented in parallel with whistleblower testimony, unreleased data, and hard-hitting reporting that exposes how systemic bias shows up in everything from symptom dismissal to life-or-death decision-making in hospital settings.
But this isn’t just a film about harm—it’s also about resistance. Delivering Justice will document peaceful, affirming home births led by certified midwives and supported by doulas, showing what it means to be seen, heard, and cared for throughout the birthing process. These stories serve as a visual counterpoint to the dominant narrative about safety in hospitals—inviting audiences to imagine new standards of maternal care grounded in dignity, trust, and community wisdom.
In addition to the film itself, Delivering Justice will be part of a broader engagement campaign that includes community screenings, educational toolkits, and events designed to connect families directly to midwifery and doula resources. Many women may be open to alternative models of care but assume they’re financially out of reach; our campaign will help demystify how these services are often covered by Medicaid or private insurance—closing the gap between desire and access.
Directed by Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Sabrina Buckwalter, and built in collaboration with a diverse, all-women production team, Delivering Justice is both a call to conscience and a blueprint for change. By combining investigative rigor with intimate storytelling, the film seeks to shift not only hearts and minds, but systems.
