Dig Deeper is a "work in progress" feature length documentary capturing an often overlooked yet relevant aspect of American musical history; the lesser-known soul artist. We are lucky to be witnessing and recording a vibrant, dynamic live soul event that has grown around an incredible series of monthly shows in Brooklyn NY. The organizers are two rare soul fanatics and DJ's who give dedication a new meaning. They often find the un-findable artist outside modern conveniences such as Facebook and Myspace; as a result many of these performers, now in their sixties and seventies, are enjoying a new heyday.
The search forms a major part of the story, but the payday is the event itself where many of the artists are returning to the stage in New York for the first time in 30 or 40 years.
Have they still got fans? You bet. Some of the artist's original vinyl 45's can soar upwards of $3,000 at auction, if you can find it. The shows are electric and the intimate pre-show rehearsals are phenomenal. This is a glimpse into a rarefied era of musical history. Until now many of the performers have received little or no royalties from their recordings. The personal stories of a vanishing troupe enrich the backdrop of their onstage performances.
The documentary becomes further personalized by witnessing the promoters' vision coming to fruition despite the challenges, and the final reward of seeing these storied performers live for the first time.
