Disform Dance Arts is a movement based company based in Atlanta, GA dedicated to creating dance that de-privileges dominating embodied aesthetics by creating work by and with dancers with diverse bodies and minds. With an experimental and research-oriented creative practice, Disform Dance Arts uses movement games, critical discussion, and collaboration to inquire into ideas, excavate embodied knowledge, bridge together our human experience, and then represent these embodied ideas and findings in performance.
Under the artistic direction of Ashlee Jo Ramsey-Borunov and with creative collaboration of participating artists, Disform Dance Arts engages in embodied research and performance that seeks to:
*Disassemble elitist weapons of wellness, health and athleticism as markers of racial, class, moral and spiritual superiority.
*Discover how dance reinforces embodied ideals that maintain social hierarchies. Discard these ideals in favor of embodied imperfection, play, community and evolution.
*Reimagine and recreate dance as a creative practice that demonstrates justice, equality and representation for people in all bodies and with all minds.
*Engage people with diverse bodies and minds to excavate embodied intelligence and create new, self-empowered embodied truths.
Join us! Our bodies are the very sites upon which dominating belief systems, institutions and policies seek power over our individual autonomy. We can use the power of dance to disassemble the embodied ideals used to disrupt our creative energy. Together we can reimagine embodied equality while protecting embodied diversity and expressing embodied truths!
