Recognizing the power of our Disabled stories to shape real and needed social change, dreaming our futures + embodying our dreams offers the Disabled public an entry point into opera that honors our Disabled agency as we tell and affirm our own stories.
A durational live performance co-created in Disabled community, dreaming our futures encompasses the transformation that takes place in our lives throughout one year as we dream our most glorious dreams into existence. Once a month, we’ll meet via Zoom for 2 hours to dream/perform a new scene in the opera/our life. Each scene builds upon our personal and collective growth in the timespace between, blurring the distinctions between opera, our dreams, and our lived realities while weaving an interconnected and evolving narrative focused on Disabled world-building.
As remote performances disappear and Covid safety guidelines cease to protect Disabled folks, online community programming is a lifeline for Disabled community. Access can not wait for governing bodies to legislate largely unenforceable bare-bones accommodations. Together, we’re dreaming futures with us in them in direct resistance to systems of oppression/eugenics that celebrate our Disabled deaths.
