Duhon Dance is a contemporary modern dance company based in New York City, under the direction of choreographer Theresa Duhon. Ms. Duhon’s recent choreographic explorations have largely centered on issues of the natural environment. Her 2007 piece “of Sand and Sea,” with a cast of 15 dancers, depicted some of the many creatures inhabiting the ocean shallows and intertidal zone, with an underlying theme of man’s destructive impact on the ocean environment. In 2008, Ms. Duhon received an iLAB mini residency with collaborator, biologist Colin Grubel, who studies the diets of cormorants. Together, they explored some of the similarities and differences between the fields of biology and dance, and created movement material based on their experiences in the lab and out in the field, observing cormorant behavior. Also in 2008, Ms. Duhon created a new piece, incorporating dance, text, and props, which brought to life the historical figure Rufus King, as well as current-day Jamaica, Queens, for the Dance Jamaica festival.
