I'm finally creating a photo-book. It'll be comprised of photographs that I made, while I was creating the documentary film, “Playing Soldier".
Each year, thousands of WWII reenactors across America spend their weekends escaping to the past. Their goal is to have a “reenactor moment”, a very private transcendence of time and space after which they can say “I felt like I was there”. This collection of documentary photographs about WWII reenacting is an insider’s look at a small, yet significant, American sub-culture. Although reenactors may aim to simply recreate the past, recreating it inevitably changes our collective memory and influences our understanding of the present. This book of photos observes that phenomenon taking place. Very few reenactors play the role of civilians - most play the role of soldier, most commonly soldiers of the U.S., Britain, and Russia, the French Resistance, and yes, they do also portray Nazis.. This project does not paint the subjects as heroes or villains but rather observes human beings with varying degrees of merits and flaws. Some flaws are inconsequential, others are large and quite glaring. Reenacting encompasses both.
