EF! is a new musical about the 40-year old Earth First! (EF!) movement. EF! is best known for popularizing dramatic direct action tactics—such as tree-sitting to save the redwoods, and locking oneself to industrial machinery to stop development in wilderness areas. What makes this project unique is that performances of EF! will be held outdoors at (or directly adjacent to—if necessary) a natural site that is actively threatened by development or industry. Thus, the choice to attend the performance directly implicates the audience in the campaign to preserve a specific site. Here, the invitation to the theater is also an invitation to act in a time and place that actually matter.
