About

Instill a Love for Literacy

Donations to windswept writers support a free and imaginative writing program for school-age children in Philadelphia. Our program helps children develop and strengthen their voices while igniting their passion for and commitment to literacy.

In 2015, former UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stated, "The future starts with the alphabet." Literacy, as part of education, is a fundamental human right. Ban Ki-moon, the Former UN Secretary-General, emphasized that "Illiteracy weakens communities and undermines democratic processes through marginalization and exclusion. These and other impacts can combine to destabilize societies." Our program aims to transform students' relationships with writing, building their confidence and pride.

Why Your Support Matters

We empower voices and help kids develop a love for writing, giving them the tools to express themselves and share their stories confidently.

We take individualized action. Our program provides personalized support to celebrate and acknowledge the unique differences of diverse communities, enabling kids to relate and make significant progress in their learning journey.

We collaborate with under-resourced communities and housing projects, offering our services for free to those who need them the most.

We cultivate wonder. Our programs inspire imagination and creativity, making writing a powerful tool for storytelling, processing experiences, building community, and bringing dreams to life.

Many kids need help with writing success, such as learning English as a second language, experiencing financial and housing instability, and lacking one-on-one attention in school. In a world that often devalues the voices and stories of young people of color, writing can empower them to express themselves, celebrate their cultures, and participate in our national dialogue, making writing skills essential for a just and democratic society.

When our students feel confident and proud of their writing abilities, they can access new opportunities, share their stories, and contribute to improving the world with their life experiences and innate creative genius.
