English Girls do Great in LA

Eloise’s vagina is broken, and she wants to know why. What begins as an attempt to solve a recurring itch becomes an excavation of red flags, betrayal and violence. Set in pre #MeToo Los Angeles, the play is a darkly comic three-hander that moves between direct address, memory, and re-enactment as Eloise claws her way toward liberation.

English Girls Do Great in LA is a surrealist comedy about domestic abuse written by Carmela Corbett and directed by Hannah Ryan. Following two staged readings in New York — at the Marilyn Monroe Theater in 2023 and Open Jar Studios in 2024 —  we are now seeking to bring the play to a fully realized, month-long production. Our goal is to present the work either in an independent theater setting or through a collaboration with a regional theater in the United States.

Carmela Corbett is an actress, writer and producer. A graduate of The Juilliard School in NYC, she has performed on the screen and stage in both the UK and US. She is the director of production company, Corbett Productions and mentors and teaches aspiring performers. Currently, she is directing a feature length documentary about the effects of war in the lives of Ukrainian creatives and will next be seen in Walden Media's, Billion Dollar Spy, set to be released 2026 and directed by Amma Asante. https://www.carmelacorbett.com

Hannah Ryan is a freelance theatre director based in Brooklyn, New York. She focuses primarily on new works and reimagined classics often exploring the themes of modern womanhood, native landscapes, and creative grief. She devises plays and theatrical experiences as a means to tell untold stories, particularly those surrounding female identity and choice. Recent credits include: Broadway Resident Director of Hamilton: An American Musical. Founding collaborator of Nettleworks. Australian Staging Director of An American in Paris.
