Exiled Theatre has been a part of the Boston fringe theatre scene for more than a decade, founded by friends and artistic collaborators Teri Incampo and James Wilkinson. In the first years of its existence, the company mounted a number of theater productions, oscillating between world-premiere plays by local writers and more established works from the theatrical canon, always with a focus on crafting unique audience experiences and empowering collaborators to take creative risks.
The company took an extended break during the COVID-19 pandemic, with members pursuing other artistic avenues. Now on the other side of that hiatus, Exiled Theatre is reestablishing itself on the Boston theatre scene with a new collection of leadership and fresh enthusiasm for their mission statement to bring locally-brewed original theatrical experiences to Boston audiences.
At its core, Exiled Theatre seeks to be a home for theatre makers who find themselves on the fringes of the mainstream, (the Exiles, if you will). The collective prides itself on being unafraid of tackling surreal and unusual pieces as well as embracing strains of dark humor. As critic Beverly Creasy noted in her 2018 review of their production of debbie tucker green’s hang “Exiled Theatre specializes in tough scripts. Somebody has to.”
A typical Exiled Theatre show embraces the “fringe” of fringe theatre as a badge of honor. Our productions are proudly barebones, believing that the best theatre comes from a focus on human connection. Our goal is always to act in dialogue with our audiences, treating them as our partners in conversations as we explore the human experience together.
