Exiled Theatre has been a part of the Boston fringe theatre scene for more than a decade with the explicit mission to present productions of new and experimental works by local and international playwrights. It has long been our belief that a theatre company should always be keeping one eye on new voices that can add to the canon and explore the human experience in original and exciting ways. Never ones to back down from challenging work, critic Beverly Creasy noted in her 2018 review of our production of debbie tucker green’s hang “Exiled Theatre specializes in tough scripts. Somebody has to.”
In the summer of 2026, the company will continue their mission with a world premiere production of the horror play, M: Refractions from an Evil Act, by Exiled Theatre co-founder, James Wilkinson.
A late-night return. A hotel room where the hair on the back of your neck goes up and you can’t quite say why. Traveling abroad to a place where she does not speak the language, a woman’s unease after a night out deepens into something far more insidious. She cannot shake the feeling that someone was in her room while she was out and that they might still be watching her from just down the hallway. The staff seems to know more than they let on. A man appears, disappears and reappears. Time loops, memory fractures and the past begins to repeat itself. As identities blur and reality destabilizes, she realizes that she must escape the hotel before she’s trapped by its history.
…Intrigued? So are we.
M: Refractions from an Evil Act is written by co-founder James Wilkinson and will be directed by frequent collaborator, Joe Juknievich. This collaboration marks an exciting artistic reunion as the two in their respective roles collaborated on Exiled Theatre’s 2017 production of Nurse Play, a production that netted three Independent Reviewer of New England (IRNE) award nominations (Best New Script, Best Actress – Fringe, Best Actor – Fringe).
All contributions to the project will go towards the various costs that come with mounting a full-scale production of a play. As a direct result of your support, costumes and props will be purchased, sets will be constructed, stage lighting will be installed, actors and other creatives who participate in the project will be compensated.
