Fear and Misery in the Third Reich, one of Bertolt Brecht's most famous plays and first of his openly anti-Nazi works, is infrequently produced in the US. The play consists of 18 vignettes, each with different characters, portraying 1930s Germany as Hitler is coming to power and the country is devolving into poverty, violence, fear, and distrust, which is eerily mirrored in the current political climate in this country.
By producing and directing Fear and Misery in the Third Reich by Bertolt Brecht we hope to combat our country's current trajectory towards fascism. Yaítza has been considering producing this play for decades. The conversations we have been having with our friends and family in the past months since Trump returned to power have made it clear that now is the time. The perspective Yaítza brings as a non-binary Puerto Rican director will shed light on the particular struggles of marginalized communities in our trying times, as well as the general strain for all non-billionaires living under a fascist regime. This production aims to be an act of resistance in the face of tyranny. We all have an opportunity to learn from this historical play and hopefully avoid the tragedy of falling victim to the whims of the most powerful through complacency, fear, and compliance.
