About

The Journey Project strives to redefine the audience experience of theatre, particularly by presenting unique site-specific theatrical experiences. Currently, TJP is developing a full production of the musical Ragtime to be performed in the Registry Room on Ellis Island.

The developmental concert of Ragtime on Ellis Island was the first step on our journey to tell our story in the place where so many stories began. In March 2018, the creative team behind Ragtime on Ellis Island is convening for an unprecedented style of artistic development: a “Sound Workshop” with LA- based sound designer Nick Tipp. The process of creating our concert in 2016 inspired us to dig deeper to find new ways to experience Ragtime on Ellis Island. In assessing the acoustic and spatial dynamics of the Ellis Island Registry Room, we wanted to find an approach to sound that not only allowed for the best possible sonic quality, but also granted us the freedom to unlock the potential of the journey to and within the site itself. Our workshop will explore an innovative method of live performance wherein the performances, orchestrations, and audio effects are live-mixed into wireless headphones worn by each audience member. Renowned sound designer Nick Tipp is collaborating with team Ragtime on Ellis to develop a sensory experience of the piece that is the perfect match for Ellis Island. Our workshop in March will allow us to see how this innovative form of sound design can be incorporated in the full production. The generosity of our donors not only opens doors for future iterations of Ragtime on Ellis Island, but also allows for the development of exciting innovations that make site specific performance possible without limitations. This is the music of something beginning.
