Greensboro has lost so much theatre. Every since the Arts Council disowned the Carolina Theatre in 2006, local theatre companies cannot afford to rent space there. The Broach is unavailable, Triad Stage has been gutted, the Cultural Center isn't fabulous and is increasingly becoming expensive. The City of Greensboro didn't add a small theatre space in the Tanger Center for the community, so local theatre companies such as Triad Pride and Summerfield Stage, are doing great work in small churches.
In an effort to pull people and theatre artists out of their corners - we are creating an ongoing theatre showcase called Cafe Cabaret in a nightclub downtown. We will create new "Episodes" every 4 months, with new performers and new material. Each time, we will raise our standards and expectations, as well as our performance values. But the most exciting part of this project, is that we are intentionally assembling a diverse ensemble - diverse in age, race and institutional connection. People are meeting folks they've never met before. Singing together, creating together. Students and very seasoned actors. And we are paying everyone a small stipend for their professional commitment.
Moving forward, actors and singers in the greater Piedmont Triad area can use this Cabaret to workshop material. A piece of sketch comedy. A song they want to use for an audition. A monologue they want to try in front of an audience. And we will create a strong program that moves and entertains, including everyone's material, and ensemble pieces assigned to them.
EPISODE ONE is very exciting. The most powerful musical pieces are topped by yet another powerful piece - or something very silly and sexy. We're doing a 10-minute play and a 5-minute monologue that will tear your heart out. We'll send you off into Intermission on a HIGH - but you have NO idea what we give you in Act II.
We're renting professional sound equipment and lighting. We are paying professional musicians. Ticket sales will be strong but will not cover our expenses. One performance will cost us $9000. We cannot do any of this without YOU!
So come and be part of this with us! Come to our Sitzprobe! When singers and the band work together for the first time. Come to our tech rehearsal in the Continental Club. Get really good seats in a very small club space.
We'll sell 75 tickets easily. Not sure we'll fit 75 people in the room. But we will try.
This is too exciting to miss.
Be with us. We need early support and early supporters. We cannot do this without you.
