This performance trio includes Lindsay Hopkins (movement), Keefe Jackson (saxophone) and Wilson Tanner Smith (Cello), who have been working together as a constellation since the fall of 2021 with a series of exploratory sessions and rehearsals at Hamlin Park Fieldhouse and Constellation in Chicago. In February 2022 they performed at the Facility Theater in Chicago, which also included Precious Jennings (movement) and Bill Harris (percussion).
Together we create performances born from a rehearsal process that include a series of improvisational practices which allow the composition of dance and music to evolve from exploring the energetic pathways between body and sound.
Our work continues with our current project, Frequency (working title). It has no expiration date and our hope is to create an investigative movement-and-sound structure that can be used for performances, with additional performers, as well as within workshops for educational purposes to support other artists in the development of holistic rehearsal processes.
One question at the forefront of our research is: How do we unify our intentions between creating movement and musical sound in order to create cohesive performance composition?
We create our performances by listening from both our physical and etheric nervous system through a rehearsal process supported by somatic meditation, embodiment practices and games, and deep listening. With a focus on the inclusion of meditation and somatic healing practices to support us in creating our work we wake up our creative flow through an acknowledgement of our internal landscape. This allows our performance work to create an energetically tangible atmosphere and visual world within which our movement and sound lives. We influence each other through our compositional choices, and allow sound to shape and change the movements of the body and the body to shape and change musical choice.
This June we are attending an artist residency at SASSO in Switzerland in order to allow our rehearsal process time and space needed to further develop. Our time in Switzerland also includes a public performance in Lucerne.
While our accommodation and studio space is provided by the site in Switzerland, we are in need of supplementing our travel costs for the residency which we have not been able to cover through grant proposals.
Our hope, after our time in Switzerland, is to bring our work home to Chicago in August 2023.
