About

My 10th original play Spank Bank Time Machine will play at Charm City Fringe this October in Baltimore and at The Neofuturists this November in Chicago.  It is a solo, audience-participatory performance about me healing from the loss of my sex worker friends who overdosed during quarantine.  To make this possible, I will be fundraising $3,000 Dollars. $1,000 will pay my director and myself. $1,000 will go to graphic designers for Posters, merch and filming/editing.  $1,000 will go to registration fees, flight, marketing expenses.

Why is this important?
This show raises awareness about life-saving interventions such as Narcan/Naloxone. Narcan is the brand name of a nasal spray version of Naloxone, which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. In this way, Narcan is an actual time machine, offering the chance to go back for a do-over.

I developed the play on tour for the 2023 Orlando and Cincinnati Fringe Festivals, where I was able to hand out over 100 boxes of Narcan through community partnerships. Stephanie Fithen with the Hamilton County Public Health Department provided Narcan Nasal Sprays for my audiences in Cincinnati and had this to say after seeing the show twice:

“Narcan can be intimidating to some, as they don’t necessarily know how they would react if they saw someone experiencing an overdose. I’m so glad Spank Bank Time Machine lets people know exactly what to do… Many of us have been impacted by substance use and overdose, yet there is still a great deal of stigma. I think the story is so raw and emotional, and really brings us back to the reality that we are losing people we love. "

REVIEW EXCERPTS:
"John Michael hits the stage like a popper-powered hurricane... If only one life is saved by his harrowing audience-participation Narcan demonstration, this carefully crafted yet bravely unbound show was more than worth it."- Seth Kubersky, Orlando Weekly

“Many may interpret this show as being “a lot” but I see it as a show that’s needed, quite frankly. Overdoses are something that’s not talked about…   Spank Bank Time Machine is not only a comedy but it’s a show that’s breaking the stigma. It shows that everyone is deserving of love and compassion. People, see this funny but powerful one-person show.” -Ariel Mary Ann, League of Cincinnati Theatres
