Girl From the Station

Some things you just know.

About

Summary: Girl from the Station is a short film inspired by true events. It follows Bing, a middle-aged Chinese man who struggles to balance work, family life, and assimilating into their new home in New York City. Amidst the challenges of a demanding wife and an apathetic boss, he meets a stranger at a train station who is unlike anyone he has ever met, providing what might seem like a glimpse of hope in Bing’s somber life.

Director's Statement: Girl from the Station is a film about mental illness through the lens of a Chinese immigrant. Coming from a Chinese family with a schizophrenic background, the topic fascinates me. Not only was this mental disorder the reason for my parent’s separation, but it is also what compels me to tell stories that have been silenced for too long. It is common in the Chinese community to internalize our problems; to suck it up and deal with it, rather than seek the help that we need. Through this film, I hope to spark more conversations about mental illness in the Asian community while illustrating the effects of schizophrenia, maintaining an understanding that schizophrenia is usually a reflection of what a victim is going through and not always what it might seem like. I also hope to show people that they should never keep their problems to themselves. No matter how hard it might be, you should always talk to someone, even when you think no one will listen. Most of the time, internalizing our struggles will only make it worse, potentially putting ourselves at risk for mental health issues.
