gmtc–golden monkey trading company 金猿商社 is a new york city-based performance laboratory in chinatown dedicated to supporting artists and practitioners navigating migratory circumstances. founded in august 2025 by seoul-born curator and producer sunmi yong, gmtc serves as a vital platform for bipoc, female, and queer practitioners who are frequently overlooked or tokenized by conventional institutions. we provide the essential resources necessary for artists to sustain their practices on their own rhythms and terms, including fair treatment, dedicated workspace, and production support.
we engage not only traditional performance artists but also practitioners across the art industry whose work possesses the profound potential to redefine the boundaries of performance. for these 2-month commissions, residents inhabit the space to lead workshops and present final performance outcomes. past residents include jenny wu of artreview, whose residency on performance as writing is culminating in a forthcoming book, and an architect and designer kyong kim, who created durational performative furniture for visitor activation. currently, poet sol cabrini is conducting intimate one-on-one sessions leading to a final performance on april 18, 2026. upcoming residencies include tamara khasanova from may to june, who will present "disperse the commons" to engage artist kitchens and broaden performance participation, followed by maria-elena pombo from july to august, who will explore the material remnants of venezuelan history and memory.
gmtc is committed to making performance both accessible and approachable. located within a vibrant chinatown office building, our space operates in radical harmony with neighbors such as immigration services, notary offices, and acupuncturists. by existing alongside these everyday anchors of the immigrant experience, gmtc transforms the logistical necessities of the migratory journey into a collective and creative site of collaboration.
