Golden Cage Musical

"The Golden Cage" is an award-winning  musical about a glorious, mythical cage that’s irresistible from the outside, and inescapable from the inside.  

An original fairy tale about perception, isolation and the power of human connection, it's been described as Wizard of Oz meets Waiting for Godot.

The story tells of two creatures who meet on either side of its bars: Boris, half-man and half-bird, is stranded on the outside after a life-long quest to find this legendary cage. Alphea, trapped on the inside, is a melodramatic diva, who longs for freedom but fears having it, and can’t remember how she got trapped. 

In 2022 this musical won awards for Best Actor, Best Musical Score and Most Innovative Production at the CreateTheater New Works Festival in NYC - where it was filmed by the Streaming Musicals production company and acclaimed as a "musical and lyrical masterpiece" by Tony-Nominee Paul Gordon. YOUR donations made that possible!  

In April 2023 we released the musical on film so viewers worldwide can be moved by this powerful story. Now we're working to close out the film's production costs as we begin outreach to opera and theater companies to collaborate on new productions of the underlying play.

Its universal and timely subject matter, sophisticated music by a Grammy-Nominated female composer and whimsical characters make The Golden Cage a show for multi-generational audiences to see together. It offers a common language to talk about the trap of isolation, the polarized reality of being an ‘insider’ or an ‘outsider’ — and the discovery that it’s only through human connection that we can break through to our common humanity and the glorious truth of who we most deeply are.

Now available to be licensed for live performance, The Golden Cage is what's often called a "producer’s dream," with its two-person cast, small orchestra, single set, and casting that's open to any gender, age, race or body type - with a universal message that appeals to a wide audience.

Our goal is to bring this piece to its place in the lexicon of musical theater,  through the film, so it can have an international reach and can then be licensed for LIVE performance by theater and opera companies, festivals, community theaters, colleges and schools.
