The Grand Guignolers present The Man Who Laughs, a theatrical production created and directed by Debbie McMahon, based on the novel by Victor Hugo. With an original soundtrack, the piece joins heightened language with extensive movement and puppetry based storytelling. This piece tells the story of the son of a condemned nobleman whose face has been carved into a smile, becoming a clown and the 'mouthpiece of mankind.'. The story is both a call for and premonition of Revolution and a love story set in the melodrama genre. The lead character, portrayed in a 1920s film, was the inspiration for the character, the Joker.
Since 2007, the Grand Guignolers have been offering original productions that combine a variety of traditional popular physical theatre genres such as commedia dell’arte, melodrama, mime, puppetry, dance, Grand Guignol, vaudeville, magic, etc. in a 1920s Parisian cocktail party environment.
