About

Hammerspace is a contemporary art platform headquartered in Grand Rapids. We curate site-responsive pop-up exhibitions, while also operating a year-long artist cohort that provides professional development, critique, community support and exhibition opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists. Hammerspace exists to rethink how art is made, shown, and sustained. Rather than prioritizing speed, scale, or constant output, we build flexible frameworks that honor slow, cyclical, and care-centered creative practices. Our programming supports parent artists, recognizing the complexities of balancing art and family life. From family-friendly openings to events scheduled around nap times and after-bedtime meetings, Hammerspace creates a space where both art and family can thrive. Our programs include: Curated contemporary exhibitions, a year-long artist cohort for parent artists and caregivers, a free, monthly, virtual critique group open to all artists, Site-responsive exhibitions, artist talks, and collaborative events. Our primary seasonal venue is the Hammerspace Gallery — A residential garage that was transformed into an intimate a white box gallery. We are extending our mission into the wider community to activate non traditional spaces across West Michigan.
