Hands of a Nation is the vision of visual artist and social entrepreneur Jana Napoli, in collaboration with photographer/filmmaker, Barry Lewis, and producer/editor & writer Hannah Charlton. Alongside local Icelanders, we set to explore a unique perspective of the Icelandic island nation. Through the ancient practice of palmistry, Jana and her team set out to understand the Icelandic character through the intimate act of reading individual palms.
This project begins with a journey across Iceland engaging with locals on land which is facing the impact of global warming, to promote understanding and break down barriers, through direct contact with rural Icelanders in the outlying parts of Iceland, that rarely have their voice represented in the cultural world, especially teenagers. Traveling through four different regions of Iceland, with the help of local students as her interpreters, Jana hopes to read at least 350 Icelandic palms, defining the distinct characteristics of Icelandic people through their hands. With the information gathered, the team hopes to create an art installation in each region creating a visual data map of cultural identifiers.
