Mortally wounded on the battlefield, 369th Infantryman Henry Johnson begins to have his life flash before his eyes. Before he loses consciousness, he realizes he isn't alone. The Inkman, a manifestation of anti-Black sentiment and Jim Crow era violence buried within Henry's mind follows him through his memories, tormenting him and trying to convince him that as a Black man, there is nothing worth living for.
