My name is Sally Thomson, and I am a documentary photographer with a background in conservation planning and landscape architecture. Ten years ago, I began a documentary project called HOMEGROUND that has taken me on a remarkable journey across the American Southwest and the Rocky Mountains to explore the region's vast, imperiled rangelands and the people and practices involved in restoring and sustaining these vital landscapes.
The project has recently evolved into a book to create a tangible and enduring medium to share the visual narratives, insights, and knowledge I've gained with a wider audience. It aims to provide a broad understanding of the profound impact of rangeland management through images and text, and encourage a collective commitment to preserving biodiversity, soil health, and rural livelihoods.
This journey has allowed me to connect with many inspiring individuals who dedicate their lives to conservation ranching. Essays by Tony Malmberg, Bob Budd, and Nancy Ranney, leaders in the field, are included in the book. Through their stories and others, the book underscores their unwavering commitment, deep love for the land, and tireless efforts to create a sustainable future.
Support HOMEGROUND
HOMEGROUND has been a self-initiated and funded project but will require support to assist in reaching a wider network. My goal is to raise $15,000 to cover the financial demands required to print, distribute, and market the book and related exhibition.
In a world grappling with climate change and diminishing resources, supporting HOMEGROUND highlights the positive contributions of conservation ranching. It shines a light on the collective effort of addressing environmental challenges, promoting sustainable land management, and fostering a deeper appreciation for the intricate connections between agriculture, conservation, and our shared ecosystems.
HOMEGROUND is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. That means your contributions are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
