About

Hot salt cold light: an oceanopera is a lo-fi experimental multimedia musical performance about missed messages, shitty jobs, invisible labors (both human and non), technological nightmares, and mass extinction. It’s about moving forward through wave after wave of catastrophe, and mostly, about loving whales and the ocean beyond human time. Created by Svetlana Chirkova and Kristin Dombek for analog, digital, and human voices under the influence of waves and whales, hot salt cold light incorporates flying curtains, lights and video projections to create an immersive aquatic encounter. Lyrics and spoken words are drawn from interviews with marine biologists, accounts of scientific efforts to translate whale song, and the creators' experiences working for tech startups. The performance will premiere in a warehouse beside the Hudson River in Kingston, NY August 22-24, 2024, featuring Brittany K. Allen, Ashley Crawfor, and Lindsay Quayle.
