Photography, Mentorship, and sustained inquiry into the Unseen
Domestic Interiors & Other Tales
Domestic Interiors: Brittany Markert presents a new immersive multimedia exhibition in collaboration with Sandy Loaf in New Orleans. Help bring this exhibition to life!
In Rooms is an ongoing photographic project and evolving artistic initiative founded and led by multidisciplinary artist Brittany Markert. Since 2011, the work has explored unseen emotional and psychological dimensions of human experience through analog photography, self-portraiture, bookmaking, writing, filmmaking, and traditional darkroom printing. Rooted in questions of memory, identity, transformation, catharsis, and the unconscious—and informed by depth psychology and the writings of Carl Jung—In Rooms uses the camera as a tool to give form to experiences that can be difficult to articulate through language alone.
The project is now expanding through the development of the In Rooms Foundation, an artist-led initiative dedicated to sustained creative inquiry, mentorship, education, and public engagement. Based in the heart of the French Quarter in New Orleans, programming includes workshops, artist talks, critiques, darkroom demonstrations, exhibitions, visiting artists, mentorship, and access to a working artistic space and library. A central goal is to create subsidized and tuition-free opportunities for artists who seek meaningful artistic guidance, space, and educational resources but may not otherwise be able to afford them.
Alongside this public programming, Markert is undertaking the ongoing research, organization, digitization, printing, and publication of a comprehensive twelve-year In Rooms book. The project will bring together photographs, archival materials, writing, and research to trace the evolution of an unconscious visual language across more than a decade of work.
Since In Rooms has long engaged with psychologically complex experiences, the project also seeks to contribute to broader and more open conversations around mental health by creating opportunities for reflection, artistic expression, and meaningful connection. Through exhibitions, publications, educational programs, and artist support, In Rooms seeks to create spaces where artists and audiences can slow down, investigate their interior worlds, engage difficult or vulnerable experiences through creative practice, and develop deeper relationships with art and one another.
With your support, In Rooms can continue preserving and researching its twelve-year archive while expanding public programming, artist mentorship, and the development and publication of the work.
