About

In the Room
is a national mentorship initiative that bridges the gap between conservatory training and the professional opera world through immersive, production-based fellowships.

While conservatories provide exceptional musical training, few opportunities exist for students to experience the realities of working inside a professional opera company before entering the profession. Success in today's industry requires not only artistic excellence, but also an understanding of rehearsal processes, collaboration, professional expectations, networking, and career development. In the Room exists to provide that missing bridge.

Through competitive fellowships, emerging singers are paired with established professional artists during the rehearsal and performance period of a professional opera production. Rather than participating in a traditional masterclass or workshop, fellows are truly in the room—observing rehearsals, engaging in one-on-one mentorship, attending coachings and production activities when appropriate, and gaining an authentic understanding of the profession from the inside.

Each fellowship is designed around the unique production, mentor, and fellow, creating meaningful opportunities for artistic, professional, and personal growth. The experience concludes with a guided reflection that helps participants translate what they have learned into the next stage of their careers.

The impact extends beyond the fellow. Conservatories strengthen connections with the professional field, opera companies deepen their educational outreach and cultivate future artists, and accomplished professionals are given a meaningful opportunity to mentor the next generation.

Our vision is to build a national network of immersive mentorship fellowships that connect artists, conservatories, opera companies, and philanthropists in a shared investment in the future of opera. By giving emerging artists the opportunity to be in the room, we prepare them not only to enter the profession—but to thrive within it.
