Intimate.See is a women's empowerment program that utilizes the platforms of professional concert dance and multi- disciplinary artistic collaborations to inform and to create a positive community impact.
The Intimate.See Project includes 4 components:
1. Dance residency
2. Cultural Exchange3. Public presentation
4. International dance festival representation
Intimate. See is currently taking place in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania annually. This country is a society govern by the laws and rules of men. Women are quite marginalized and tracks for growth professionally are limited and even more restricted in the arts, specially dance. Men stand front and center on the stage. Men are allow to take classes, accept internships internationally, participate openly in festivals that expose them to opportunity to excel. The women who participate in dance are categorized negatively mostly as promiscuous and unfit to marry. They dance in the back if they are granted the opportunity to dance on stage and have never graced the stage as an all-womens contemporary modern ensemble publicly ever until last summer.
Through this program we are working to change the narrative of women in dance. We participate in cultural exchange, learn the stories and backgrounds of the Tanzanian women involved. We discover and create from common emotional, societal and/ or psychological spaces, and build bridges of connectivity and spheres of collective confidence.
Intimate. See is led by ALL women. It's curated and choreographed by 2 African American Women. In Tanzania, those performing are ALL local Tanzanian women who are in MUDA Africa's dance training program. The set, costuming, sculpting and body art are also done by local Tanzanian women artisans.
Initmate.See's goal is to create a cross continental community of empowered women, who feel strong and fearless in their ability to lead in whatever they chose to do.
This is the first documented program of its kind and we are excited about the overwhelming positive response. Thank you so very much your support in 2019 and for helping these women feel “CHUMA CHUMA” translated to strong in Swahili. We are now preparing to return in May of 2020!
