About

The film follows Isabel and Ruben Toledo, who arrived in the United States as children on the 1960s Freedom Flights from Cuba. When they meet in high school, their love sparks a lifelong artistic collaboration that propels them into the heart of New York’s electrifying downtown scene of the 1980s.

From her debut at New York Fashion Week in 1984, Isabel Toledo emerges as a singular force in fashion—her independence, fierce yet elegant fusion of her Cuban heritage, and uncompromising vision earning the admiration of her peers. Yet, in an industry dominated by conformity and white male gatekeepers, she and Ruben often find themselves overlooked. Refusing to bow to commercial pressures, they chart their own path, embracing creativity over convention— a bold act for two immigrants navigating the Reagan-era hostility toward newcomers. Over the years, the Toledos cultivate a devoted following of trailblazing women, culminating in Isabel’s career-defining moment: Michelle Obama’s selection of her dress for the historic 2009 Presidential Inauguration. It is the ultimate recognition—proof that she has been woven into history.
