Our Story
There are certain things you should know before you visit Jawbone.
For one, watch your footing, especially up by the old mine. You can never be too sure what rust is lurking up there.
Second, if you’re scared of moths, there’re a lot of ‘em up here and they’re only getting bigger.
Oh, and if you’re visiting now, there are rumors of a new haunting. The residents of the Bones (that’s what the locals call it, of course) believe in ghosts. With every fiber of their being they believe in ghosts.
In an old mining town in the Pacific Northwest, 17-year-old Frankie, Sofia and Lilah attempt to navigate growing up amid hauntings, ghost stories, and a sudden influx of mysterious white moths. Jawbone explores the nexus between ghost stories and sexual assault, asking which stories we choose to believe and which we don't.
In August 2020, we will take
Jawbone to the Edinburgh Fringe festival – the largest performance festival in the world. There, we will extend the conversations of sexual assault and legacy to a global audience. With this mission in mind, we are proud to be collaborating with the
Sexual Assault Resource Center and the
My Body Back Project to take the conversation of consent and survivor support beyond the stage and direct our viewers to these important resources.
Our project is ambitious, but with a passionate cast and crew of artists, we are excited to begin our journey to Jawbone. In order for us to bring Jawbone fully to life at the Fringe Festival, we need your help to raise $25,000. With the support of our generous friends and family, we've already raised $7,550 and are on our way!
Our Journey
Our band of remarkable artists is determined to lift this story to an international level after having spent months workshopping and crafting this piece in the States. Our cast will be coming from all over the United States with the vital talents and skills to build the world of Jawbone. As we assemble in Philadelphia this July, every single one of us will be shifting into an array of roles, not only as the performers but as the producers, designers, marketing team, and technical crew. CAST and TEAM features: Isabella Waldron (playwright/producer), Josh Walker (director/producer/moth-puppet-crafter-extradorinaire), Bex Silberfein (producer), Natalie Torpey, Jackie Floyd, Annika Cowles, Madison Claus, Logan Luiz, Nicolae Muntean.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a month long festival located in Edinburgh, Scotland, that hosts 1,000’s of performances, from theatre to dance to comedy to circus. Jawbone will be among some of the most recognized companies, performers, and pieces from all over the world, which will help propel us further as artists into our professional careers and allow us to share this story that we believe in. We have been given the opportunity to perform at the acclaimed Greenside Venues ("Undoubtedly one of the most charming venues at the Fringe" - The Guardian), which is right in the heart of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Greenside has been recognized for decades for the spectacular productions that they have hosted, and we have the chance to be a patch of that fabric.
Our Ask
We need $25,000 to cover an array of vital expenses that are necessary for us to bring the play to Edinburgh: venue expenses for the month of August, festival registration fees; cast and crew housing for the month; a small stipend for the nine artists working on Jawbone; materials for the 50 moth puppets and our set; the transportation of our set from Philadelphia to Scotland; and marketing materials (posters, flyers).
We want you to be a part of this venture. If you can donate, your contributions for the charitable purposes of Jawbone are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law through our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. There are also some awesome perks from us that come along with your donation which you can see on the right-hand side of the page.
If you can’t donate financially at this time, there are still many ways that we could use your support! The power of word of mouth is invaluable to our process. We would be so thankful to have you share our Fractured Atlas page on social media, in an email, or even sending a carrier pigeon to your friends, enemies, family, anyone! You can connect with our social media on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (@welcometojawbone) or check out our website because we will be documenting our journey. Also, check out the websites and social media pages (@sarcoregon, @mybodybackproject) of the organizations we are working with and help spread the word of the important work they do and resources they provide for survivors of sexual assault.
With your support, Jawbone will be transformed from words on a page to a world stage, inspiring audiences to reexamine their own beliefs and to remind other young women who have felt the haunting of sexual assault that their stories are real. We are excited, humbled, and honored to share Jawbone with you and the world. Thank you.
