Just Play is a production company and 2X Latin Grammy nominated music platform focusing on:
1. Music Performance and Composition
2. Traveling Music Documentary Production
3. Interactive Music Workshops, Master Classes and Presentations
Peruvian Producer and Singer Araceli Poma and American Bassist, Composer and Producer Matt Geraghty lead Just Play with the goal of creating compelling performance projects and documentary content that unite, inspire and educate local and global communities on roots music and the stories of marginalized artists in the Americas.
By leveraging two very powerful mediums— music and film— Just Play raises awareness about social inclusion, demystifies differences between cultures and fosters equality through the arts.
Music Performance & Composition via Afro-Andean Funk:
Afro-Andean Funk is a band formed in 2021 by Geraghty and Poma that brings visibility to the endangered indigenous cultures and languages of the Americas. The group composes and develops music integrating languages such as Quechua, the most spoken native language in South America, and Kukama, a Peruvian Amazonian language spoken by only 1500 people.
Traveling Music Documentary Production:
Just Play is an ongoing travel music documentary series focused on building alliances between musicians in North and South America. To date the project has produced series in New York, New Orleans, Cuba, Peru, Puerto Rico and Brazil. The team will soon continue their travels and undertake projects with musicians in Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Senegal, Mali, Benin y Cabo Verde, seeking to bring visibility to talented women artists around the world through collaborations, impactful high-quality content and a robust social media presence.
Interactive Workshops, Master Classes and Documentary Presentations:
Just Play workshops invite participants to engage with intricate dance rhythms and the music of Peru. Get ready to learn the basic dance steps of Afro-Peruvian musical styles like marinera, festejo, landó and tondero along with popular Andean musical styles like huayno. We’ll also do a demonstration of unique Afro-Peruvian instruments that have survived generations and played a fundamental role in Peruvian music like the quijada de burro, cajita and cajón.
