About

Planted in 2020, Kamamo House is a Honolulu-based queer theatre, new work & artist cultivation/advocacy organization, and podcast. Nurtured and grown by Lead Steward + Head Jester + Primary Arts Advocate, Sean-Joseph Takeo Kahāokalani Choo, bringing a lifetime of experience in the performing arts to the garden of possibilities with his production company. Kamamo House is dedicated to the stories and people of Hawai’i and exists to support artists at whatever stage they are at in their process, giving special attention to MVPFAFF+ & 2SLGBTQIA artists.

Kamamo House hosts semi-regular works-in-progress share-ings featuring movement and theatrical artists. Named after Sean’s fierce, hapa grandmother, Eloise Tsuru Kamamo Matsuno Choo, Kamamo House has produced fierce work to honor her spirit, cultivating "M.Ā.L.A. mindsets" and crafting "moʻolelo moments".  M.Ā.L.A. is an acronym summing up how Kamamo House moves in the world, as one does when in a tranquil māla (garden):

-"M" for "mālama".  Caring for ourselves, our fellow artist, and nature is a high priority in Kamamo House.  So many institutions prioritize product over people.  Not in this house.

-"Ā" for "āniania".  When we carry out our tasks with calmness, it promotes calmness.

-"L" for "laulima".  In the spirit of ensemble, we work together.  Many hands make the hana light.

-"A" for "aloha".  Carrying the spirit of aloha, of generous compassion.
