KESSWA Studios is an experimental pedagogical project that positions hair braiding as an ontological framework for interdisciplinary practice, informed by KESSWA's studio practice. As a natural hairstylist and transdisciplinary artist creating at the intersections of fiber art, music, new media, and performance, this project contributes to the development of Detroit's avant-garde artist community rooted in Black feminist tradition and spiritual practice.
Through in-person workshops, classes, special performances, and an online knowledge base, KESSWA Studios will offer conceptual and research-based workshops on the West African tradition of hair braiding, Stott Pilates classes tailored to the needs of vocalists and hairstylists, consulting services for artists, organizations, salons, and salon professionals, as well as a weekly podcast.
