Dear Friends and Family,
We hope this message finds you with community, loved ones, and hope. We, like many of you, are grieving the devastating result of this year’s election. But one thing is abundantly clear: now is the time when our stories are more important than ever.
We know you might not have heard from us much this past year and there is a reason why: we have been busy immersing ourselves in creative work, expanding our craft, and writing subversive comedies and emotionally-intimate dramas that represent our communities for stage and screen.
Thanks to your support in 2023 and 2024, we wrote 4 TV pilots, 1 feature film, 2 plays, and continued to refine our 2 full-length musicals – all of them original works.
These new works collectively feature:
- 14 trans main characters
- 28 queer main characters
- 18 women main characters
- 17 main characters of color
We did all of this despite the 148-day-long 2023 WGA Writers Strike, during which we were unable to pitch or sell our television and film projects to the industry, and therefore unable to make a single dollar from our work. Still, we are determined to continue to write sharp, witty, and diverse projects that uplift and represent trans/queer and BIPOC communities on our own terms, with or without industry support. We feel passionately that original stories need to be told, now more than ever.
We as Queer artists of color have always known one truth – that we cannot rely on our governments to save us. It is only through community that we can uplift and support each other, keep each other safe, and keep our stories alive through these dark times. We need your help in order to keep doing our work.
What We Need:
Being full-time artists in 2024 and beyond is an ongoing financial challenge. We need your help so that we can keep telling our stories. To achieve this, we are launching an annual fund to help fill in the gaps of industry support and other income.
Our goal this year is to raise $50,000 to support our ongoing development of these nine projects so that we can continue to work towards sharing them with the world in 2025. Every dollar we receive will go directly to that mission by supporting the administrative, business, and creative costs of our time and work.
A one-time donation of $1,000 will help support us for a week, and a one-time donation of $4,000 would help support approximately a month of our creative time next year. Every donation of any size will help us continue to invest in our work as artists as we attempt to uplift the stories of our communities on stage and screen. You can also set up recurring donations of any size ($10, $50, $100, or more!) per month to support our work year-round.
What We’re Working Towards:
For those excited to know more about our new and original stories, here is what we can share about our various projects and works in progress:
- Interstate - our semi-autobiographical full length musical about a band on an epic road trip across Queer America
- MISS STEP - an ‘80s dance aerobics musical featuring an all-trans lead cast
- A stage play about a masc/femme lesbian couple whose relationship changes when they make friends with a straight couple in an open relationship
- A stage play about a transman’s experience with childhood sexual abuse, trauma, and pregnancyabout childhood sexual abuse and trauma as a trans person
- A murder mystery whodunnit feature film set in an alternative lesbian pageant
- A TV drama about Ah Toy, the first Chinese-American sex worker in San Francisco
- A TV drama about a Queer Asian woman seeking answers to the disappearance of her partner
- A TV dramedy about a Chinese-American trans porn star who deals with a very difficult family obligation
- An animated adult TV comedy about a group of birds who love to “people-watch” in Central Park
What We Will Give Back:
Your year-end donations will help springboard what we hope to be a year of creative work in 2025. In addition to our deepest gratitude, we also want to make sure we give back to the community supporting us in return.
- Every person who donates will receive a personal email of gratitude from us for their contribution.
- Those who donate $25, $50, $100, or more will be invited to attend a masterclass on storytelling that we will host next year.
- Those who donate $1,000, $10,000, or more will be invited to attend open studio presentations that give an intimate and exclusive behind-the-scenes preview of our new work.
Thank you for keeping Queer voices alive.
We would not be here without our community of generous people like you. Your support has made it possible for us to have spent the last 16 years making art as a team, art that uplifts the voices of our people. Every encouraging text message, email, and dollar has gone and will continue to go directly to keeping these stories alive.
You have made every day possible for us as artists. Thank you.
Please consider helping us reach our goal of sustaining and growing original storytelling by making one final contribution before the end of the year. If you can’t contribute financially, we would be grateful if you would help us spread the word about our campaign by sharing the link with your network or via social media.
Once again, thank you so much for your consideration. We're so grateful for our communities’ ongoing love and support.
With Love,
Kit and Melissa
