After the sudden passing of Kumu Kale Pawai, na alaka‘i Chris and Tristan founded the Kumu Kale Memorial Project (KKMP) in the hopes of archiving and perpetuating their teacher’s creativity, lessons, choreography, and legacy. Na Pua Mai Ka Lani Nuioka, formally the New York City branch of kumu’s hula halau (hula school), falls under KKMP and is the physical embodiment of his teachings by performing, and perpetuating the hula and Hawaiian culture to the New York City metropolitan community. Halau Na Pua Mai Ka Lani translates into 'The Many Different Flowers from Heaven.' It is said that Queen Lili'uokalani favored the children, calling them the flowers (Na Pua) of Hawaii. It is from that saying Kumu Kale named his halau, which started in June 2002.
