About

A woman sits at home waiting for a phone call from her lover that should have rang days ago.

La voix humaine (The Human Voice), is a one-act opera that follows our female protagonist's side of the 45 minute conversation that unfolds once her lover finally calls. In this new production, a spool of red string will represent the telephone, catching on various objects in the apartment as she paces on the call, the conversation becoming more desperate. By the end, she creates an inescapable web representative of the emotional state the phone call has left her in.

Starring soprano Jamila Drecker-Waxman, La voix humaine will be presented at the Brooklyn Center for Theatre Research the first week of January, 2026. In November 2025, the project will travel to Kaatsbaan Cultural Park to participate in a Weekend Residency.
