About

ladyybirdd
is the boundary-breaking musical project of New York-based flutist Gina Izzo, an artist redefining the role of the flute in contemporary music. Known for her fearless experimentation, improvisation, and analog FX, Izzo’s sound has been hailed as an "amps-to-11" experience (John Schaefer, WNYC New Sounds), pushing the instrument beyond convention.

Her 2024 debut album, "Tomorrow’s Yesterday," released under the moniker ladyybirdd, is a radical sonic exploration—what Foxydigitalis calls "the Wild West of solo flute music." Featuring collaborations with leading artists like Ambrose Akinmusire, Immanuel Wilkins, Nick Dunston, and Ian Rosenbaum, and co-produced by Joseph Branciforte, the album earned national acclaim, securing a release on Innova Recordings as part of their National Call Awards.

In an interview with Foxy Digitalis, Izzo elaborates on her creative process, highlighting her use of analog effects and extended techniques to craft expansive soundscapes. She explains, "I began with just one fx pedal – reverb – on more acoustic pieces and learned how I could utilize that pedal to sustain one note on my instrument for a very long time... Once I felt comfortable with the capabilities of that one pedal, I began experimenting with more fx in the chain – giving me endless possibilities with sound."

With performances at Duke Performances, Lincoln Center, Times Square Arts, The Jazz Standard, and the Bang on a Can Festival, ladyybirdd represents an evolving vision of contemporary flute music—where tradition meets uncharted soundscapes, and the future of the instrument is reimagined.

Through ladyybirdd, Gina Izzo continues to challenge and expand the horizons of contemporary flute music, crafting immersive experiences that transcend traditional expectations and invite listeners into uncharted auditory territories.

Your contribution will help sustain and grow a project that is actively reshaping the future of flute music. Every donation—big or small—will directly fuel the creation, performance, and evolution of ladyybirdd.
