"ladyybirdd" features original music composed and produced by flutist Gina Izzo framing the flute through washed-out reverbs, analog synthesizers, & FX in collaboration with engineer Joseph Branciforte at greyfade studio in New York City.
In the studio, the flute is processed through a series of analog guitar pedals that alter the flute's sound and creates a new musical vocabulary — drawing upon ambient electronics & rooted in improvisation. ladyybirdd's debut album "today is tomorrow's yesterday" features artists including Andy Akiho, steel-pan; Ambrose Akinmusire, trumpet; Erika Dohi, keyboards; Nick Dunston, bass; Carol Féliz, spoken word; Ian David Rosenbaum, percussion; Immanuel Wilkins, saxophone. The album is an exploration of love, loss, & self-image - as well as a process for dismantling one's relationship with them. If you sit in discomfort and learn to let go, your body works itself out," & this album is my musical response. The only musical instruction given to the artists in the studio was to "stay until you lose the urge to leave." The album will release in 2022.
Another project of ladyybirdd is in collaboration with Congolese Slam Poet Peter Komondua based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The project "Ota" documents and educates our communities on the historical story of Ota Benga, a Mbuti man known for being featured in an exhibit at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, and as a human zoo exhibit in 1906 at the Bronx Zoo. "Ota" bridges New York City and the Democratic Republic of the Congo through the artistic lens of slam poetry, electronic music, and visual installation while documenting, educating, and questioning the implications of this historic event.
Currently, women represent less than 30% of today's commissioned composers and less than 6% of today's producers. One goal of ladyybirdd is to challenge discriminatory ideas in our music production industry to shift the current structure and stagnation of today's music industry for all women's voices.
Support for ladyybirdd will go towards the costs of artist fees, recording, mixing, mastering, and post-production. Your support means so much to me. I am grateful to have you as a part of this process and thank you in advance for bringing this project to life.
