Liberating Cinema harnesses the transformative power of film for human development, economic advancement and social change. We produce films, research, courses, content, and events, shining a spotlight on underrepresented storytellers and emerging film economies. Our work co-creates learning with youth, promotes knowledge exchange between educators and researchers, accelerates opportunities for independent filmmakers, and celebrates global cinema with seasoned cinephiles.
Our flagship program is a youth film production workshop brought to communities where young people have little to no access to arts and media education and the creative economy. At the end of each workshop, the cohort conceptualizes and produces a short film together.
We currently host Call Time, a creatives collective and monthly meet-up for emerging filmmakers and creative professionals in Cape Town to develop and pitch ideas, network and collaborate. Call Time provides a space for our workshop participants to continue their practice and build meaningful relationships in the industry.
