Liberation Deck

Celebrating and inspiring revolution through tarot

About

☀️ JANUARY, 2023 UPDATE ☀️

A very big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped us reach our goals for stipending both the artists and writers who are a part of this project. We are breathing a sigh of relief to have reached that goal in these past few weeks.

**At this point, we are still looking to compensate collaborators for their administrative labor and are grateful for any additional donations! Beyond administrative stipends, all additional money raised will be spread between artists.**

About the deck:

The Liberation Tarot Deck is for those inspired by and toward revolution in the face of the able-centered, capitalist, heterocis-normative, white-supremacist patriarchy.

The deck is a large-scale collaboration between 29+ different artists and collectives across the U.S., Canada, France, Brazil, Palestine, and Mexico.

Like a traditional tarot deck, the Liberation Deck consists of different cards used for divination and inspiration. Unlike a traditional deck, which features cards like the Emperor, Queen, or Knight, the Liberation Deck features cards that symbolize critical elements of cultural and spiritual change —non-hierarchical cards like the Crone, the Rebel, and Accountability, among others.

Why this? Why now?

Tarot decks have been used for hundreds of years as a mode of divination, personal and collective storytelling, and meaning-making. Today, in a tired and extreme moment, we are in need of new tools reminding us and helping us to dream. This deck will encourage users to commit the radical act of flexing the muscle of dreaming within the context of today’s social and political realities.

At the foundation of this project is the belief that magic is an essential tool for healing and social change within our communities.

The Liberation Deck will re-write the visual vocabulary of power and its representations through lifting up new visions and stories of power and change. Figures in the deck have bodies of all shapes and sizes, colors, genders, ages, and abilities. It is an anti-capitalist world we are weaving; accountability, sustainability, healing and slowness are just as critical as production and active power-wielding.
